The Volkswagen Golf has gone through eight generations since 1974. On the Montenegrin market, the most common generations are Golf 4, 5, 6, 7 and the current Golf 8. Golf 4 (1997–2003) and Golf 5 (2003–2009) are still often offered as affordable used options. Golf 7 (2012–2020) is considered a particularly successful generation thanks to its excellent balance of quality, fuel consumption and reliability, while Golf 8 brings a modern digital interior.
The most popular engines on the Montenegrin market are the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI diesels, which offer low fuel consumption and long service life. The petrol 1.4 TSI and 1.5 TSI engines are reliable and economical. More powerful versions such as Golf GTI and Golf R deliver high performance. Transmissions include manual 5- and 6-speed gearboxes, as well as DSG dual-clutch automatic transmissions (6- and 7-speed), which are especially popular on newer generations.
Check the service history and the regularity of oil changes and the timing belt/chain replacement. With TDI engines (especially the older-generation 2.0 TDI EA189), check the condition of the DPF filter and EGR valve. With TSI engines, monitor oil consumption and the condition of the timing chain on earlier 1.4 TSI variants. For DSG gearboxes, an oil change every 60,000 km is recommended. Look for proof of mileage and a vehicle origin report.
Golf 4 and Golf 7 are most often singled out as especially reliable generations. Golf 4 because of its simple mechanics, and Golf 7 because of the good balance between modern technology and build quality. The key is that the vehicle has been regularly serviced.
For mostly city driving and annual mileage under 15,000 km, a petrol 1.4 TSI or 1.5 TSI is usually the more practical choice. For higher mileage and long trips, the 2.0 TDI diesel engine is more economical and offers more torque.
The 1.6 TDI diesel consumes an average of 4–5.5 liters per 100 km, while the 2.0 TDI uses 5–7 l/100 km. The petrol 1.4 TSI and 1.5 TSI consume 6–7.5 l/100 km. The older 1.4 TSI with a supercharger uses slightly more than the modern 1.5 TSI with EVO technology.
Oil and filter replacement in a DSG gearbox in Montenegro usually costs between 150 and 300 EUR, depending on the type of gearbox and the service center. This service is recommended every 60,000 km to avoid expensive faults.
