VW TDI engines — generation overview
The best-known are the 1.9 TDI (pump-injector, EA188) units from older Golf 4 and Passat B5/B6 models, known for exceptional longevity. They were followed by the 2.0 TDI (EA189) from the dieselgate era, and later the EA288, now used in the Golf 7 and 8, Passat B8, Tiguan and Touareg. The smaller 1.6 TDI comes in the Polo, Golf and T-Cross, while the stronger 3.0 V6 TDI powers the Touareg and Phaeton.
