Golf (5, 6, 7 and 8 generations) dominates the compact class and covers a wide price range — from around EUR 4,000 for older Golf 5 diesels to over EUR 30,000 for Golf 8 R and GTE. Passat (B6, B7, B8) is the most sought-after family sedan and estate, while Tiguan leads the SUV segment. Polo and T-Roc are popular choices among new drivers and in city use.
For 1.4 TSI engines of the first generation (EA111, 2008–2014), the main issue is the timing chain and oil pump — check whether the repair has already been done. On 2.0 TDI CR engines, most complaints relate to the EGR valve, DPF filter and high-pressure pump (CP4). DSG gearboxes — especially the dry DSG7 (DQ200) — require oil changes every 60,000 km and frequent mechatronics checks. For 1.8 and 2.0 TSI engines (EA888 gen 1 and 2), watch for oil consumption due to the well-known piston ring issue.
VW has a well-developed network of authorized сервис centers and a large number of independent VAG specialists with VCDS/ODIS diagnostics. Parts are easy to find and usually cheaper than those for premium rivals. When buying a used VW, always ask for the service book and run a VCDS diagnostic — it reveals stored faults, service interval status (Service Reset history) and helps assess whether the displayed mileage matches real use.
Among diesels, the 1.6 TDI CAYC and 2.0 TDI CFFB/CFGB, as well as later EA288 generations, stand out for reliability. Among petrol engines, the 1.6 MPI (naturally aspirated), 1.5 TSI EA211 EVO and 2.0 TSI EA888 gen 3 (from 2013) have a good reputation. Avoid earlier 1.4 TSI EA111 and first-generation 1.8/2.0 TSI units due to known faults.
Less than premium brands, more than Japanese brands. A regular service for a Golf or Passat costs EUR 120–250. DSG service costs EUR 200–400. Larger repairs — timing chain on 1.4 TSI EUR 800–1,500, DPF cleaning/replacement EUR 300–1,200, DSG mechatronics EUR 1,000–2,500.
DSG offers comfort and faster shifting, but it requires regular servicing and is more prone to faults. A manual gearbox is cheaper and mechanically more durable. If the car has DSG, make sure preventive oil change has been done and that the gearbox shifts smoothly in all gears during the test drive.
