Vans are most often divided into light commercial vans (up to 3.5 tonnes) and passenger models. Among the most common models on the Montenegrin market are Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Vito, Volkswagen Transporter, Crafter and Caddy, Ford Transit and Custom, Renault Trafic and Master, Fiat Ducato and Peugeot Boxer. High roof and extended chassis are common choices for cargo transport, while passenger versions offer 8 or 9 seats.
Vans are indispensable in construction, goods transport, delivery and tourism. Passenger versions are used for tourist transport, airport transfers and organised tours across Montenegro. Camper and converted vans are becoming increasingly popular for weekend trips and longer journeys. The market offers both imported vehicles, most often from Germany, and local used vehicles with varying service histories.
When buying a used van, check the service book, the condition of the engine and gearbox, and potential issues with the DPF filter and EGR valve, which are common in diesel units. Pay attention to corrosion under the body and in the cargo area. Check the clutch condition and whether the vehicle was used intensively for commercial purposes. Used van prices in Montenegro range from EUR 4,000 for older models to over EUR 30,000 for newer versions with low mileage.
Cargo vans do not have rear seats and have a larger cargo area with a reinforced floor, while passenger versions have up to nine seats and windows in the rear section. Passenger vans are subject to different registration and technical inspection rules.
Most vans up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight can be driven with a category B licence. Larger vehicles or vehicles with more than 9 seats require category C1 or D, depending on the configuration.
The average consumption of modern diesel vans ranges between 7 and 11 l/100 km, depending on load, engine and driving style. Larger passenger models with more powerful engines can consume more than 12 l/100 km.
