The BMW diesel range includes 2.0d engines (N47, B47) with 150, 184 and 190 HP — most common in Series 1, 3, 5 and X1/X3 models. 3.0d inline six-cylinder engines (N57, B57) in 30d and 40d versions deliver 245 to 340 HP and are used in Series 5, 7, X5, X6 and X7. Twin-turbo M Performance diesel engines (e.g. M550d) go beyond 400 HP while consuming under 8 l/100 km, which is rare in this class.
For N47 engines (production 2007–2014), check the timing chain condition — earlier batches are known for timing chain stretch, and replacement costs from 1,500 EUR upward. The newer B47 generation (from 2014) is significantly more reliable. On all BMW diesels, check the DPF filter, EGR valve and swirl flap mechanism. Short city drives reduce DPF lifespan — look for vehicles that have also been driven outside the city.
Most BMW diesels in Montenegro are imported from the EU, most often from Germany, Italy and Slovenia. Price ranges for the 320d Series 3 (F30 generation, 2012–2018) are 10,000–18,000 EUR depending on equipment and mileage. 530d (F10/G30) and X5 30d (F15/G05) are among the most sought-after premium choices. When importing, carefully check Euro emissions standards — Euro 6d models pass without issues, while older Euro 5 cars are subject to higher customs duties and fees.
The B47 (2.0d) and B57 (3.0d) generations, produced from 2014 onward, are considered the most reliable. They feature a reinforced timing chain, better emissions control and improved turbo cooling.
Yes, the 320d (with the 2.0d engine) averages 4.5–6 l/100 km, while the 520d (the same engine in a heavier body) uses 5–6.5 l/100 km. The difference is not large because they share the same power unit.
A swirl flap is a vortex flap in the intake manifold of older BMW diesels. On poorly maintained examples it can break off and enter the engine — preventive removal or replacement with a reinforced kit is recommended.
xDrive increases fuel consumption by about 0.5 l/100 km, but it significantly improves traction in winter conditions and on Montenegro’s hilly roads. For drivers who often travel to northern Montenegro — recommended.
