Most Important Mercedes Diesel Engines

OM651 (2.1/2.2 CDI) is a long-proven workhorse — used in the C, E, ML, GLK, Vito and many other models in 180/200/220/250 CDI versions with 136–204 HP. OM654 (2.0 CDI, from 2016) is the next generation with an aluminium block, used as 200d, 220d and 300d with 150–265 HP. OM656 (3.0 inline six) replaces the older V6 OM642 in 350d and 400d versions with 286–340 HP. The older OM642 (3.0 V6) is still found on the used SUV market.

What to Check Before Buying

With OM651 engines, pay attention to the injectors (often leaks on the upper part of the engine), the turbo and the balance chain. The OM642 V6 has a known issue with the vacuum pump and engine oil cooler — check whether preventive replacement has been done. The AdBlue system (on Euro 6/6d vehicles) can be expensive to repair — check for fault codes. 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic transmissions are reliable with regular oil changes every 60,000 km.

Imported Market in Montenegro

Most diesel Mercedes vehicles in Montenegro are imported from Germany, Slovenia and Italy. The C220d (W204 and W205) is among the most sought-after models, with prices from €8,000 for an older W204 to €25,000+ for a newer W205 with the AMG package. The E220d is popular in the business and family segment. GLC 220d/300d and GLE 350d/400d dominate the premium SUV offer. When importing Euro 6d-Temp and Euro 6d examples, registration is not a problem — older Euro 5 cars carry higher customs duties.
