Golf 6 (2008–2012) is the most popular choice thanks to its balance of modern features and affordability. Passat B6 and the early B7 generation (2005–2014) offer more space and comfort for a similar price. Polo 9N (2002–2009) and 6R (2009–2014) are economical city options. The first-generation Touran is a common family pick, while Caddy variants are sought after for work needs.
With 1.9 TDI PD engines (BXE, BKC), check the injector pump and dual-mass flywheel. The 2.0 TDI PD (BMM, BKD) is known for camshaft wear issues. The 1.4 TSI from 2006–2012 requires a timing chain and oil consumption check. The dry DSG gearbox (DQ200) has a history of mechatronics failures — prefer the manual or the wet DQ250. Rust on the sills and tailgate is a common issue on Golf 5 and Passat B6.
Volkswagen is one of the most common brands in Montenegro. The network of independent VAG workshops is well developed, diagnostics (VCDS) are available in Podgorica, Nikšić, Bar and other major cities. Used parts are easy to source, and original parts are among the more affordable in the premium segment thanks to high production volume.
Golf 6 offers a more modern look, better sound insulation and an improved interior, while Golf 5 has a lower price and more affordable parts. For the same money, Golf 5 usually comes with lower mileage or better equipment.
The 2.0 TDI PD (BMM, BKD, BMP) from 2005–2008 is known for camshaft problems — repairs can cost €800–€1,500. The common-rail 2.0 TDI from 2009 onward is significantly more reliable.
The wet DSG (DQ250) on the 2.0 TDI is generally reliable with regular oil changes. The dry DQ200 on the 1.4 TSI and 1.6 TDI has a history of mechatronics issues — in that combination, a manual gearbox is the better choice.
