VW TSI engines — overview

The smallest engine on offer is the 1.0 TSI (3-cylinder, EA211) with 95 to 115 HP, found in the Polo, Golf and T-Cross. The 1.4 TSI EA111 (known for the risk of timing chain stretch) was replaced by the more modern 1.4 and 1.5 TSI EA211 evo, which comes with cylinder deactivation (ACT). The stronger 2.0 TSI EA888 powers Golf GTI, R, Tiguan and Passat versions. The older 1.4 TSI Twincharger (with a supercharger and turbocharger) was technically interesting but prone to faults.

Popular Volkswagen petrol models in Montenegro

Polo and Golf with 1.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI engines are the most sought-after in the city-car segment thanks to low fuel consumption. T-Roc, T-Cross and Tiguan dominate among SUV buyers who want a petrol engine. The sporty Golf GTI and Golf R with the 2.0 TSI engine have a loyal following, while Passat TSI and Arteon are common choices for those looking for a more comfortable sedan/wagon. The Up! with the 1.0 engine is popular as a small city car.

What to check when buying a used VW TSI

The best-known issue with older 1.4 TSI EA111 engines is timing chain stretch — check for noise on cold starts. On 1.8 and 2.0 TSI EA888 Generation 2 units, oil consumption problems are common due to piston ring design. Look for proof of regular oil changes every 10,000–15,000 km. Check the condition of the DSG gearbox if the vehicle has this transmission. The smaller 1.0 TSI is generally reliable, but it requires quality premium unleaded fuel.
