The biggest share of the used Škoda market consists of Octavia (II, III and IV), Fabia (II and III) and Superb (II and III). Among SUV models, Kodiaq and Karoq are increasingly common. The most widespread engines are the VAG 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI diesel units, plus the 1.4 and 1.5 TSI turbo petrol engines. The older 1.9 TDI (PD pump-nozzle) is still common in the Octavia II generation.
The 1.9 TDI is famously durable, but it requires regular timing belt replacement every 90,000–120,000 km — missing the interval can cause catastrophic damage. The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI (EA189) engines were part of the Dieselgate scandal, so check whether the software update was carried out and whether it caused any issues with the EGR valve or DPF filter. On 1.4 TSI engines (CAVA, CAXA), timing-chain problems were reported on 2008–2014 models — check whether the chain has been replaced. The DSG dual-clutch transmission requires preventive oil changes every 60,000 km.
A used Škoda model is usually priced between 3,000 and 22,000 EUR. An older Octavia II typically costs 3,000 to 6,000 EUR, the Octavia III 6,000 to 13,000 EUR, while Superb and Kodiaq can exceed 18,000 EUR for newer examples in good condition. Škoda generally holds its value very well, and parts and servicing are cheaper than equivalent Volkswagen models.
The Škoda Octavia III with the 1.6 TDI or 2.0 TDI engine is considered one of the most reliable choices in its class. Older models with the 1.9 TDI engine (Octavia II) are also known for durability, provided the timing belt replacement intervals are respected.
Škoda sits in the mid-range for maintenance costs. A regular service costs 100–200 EUR, and parts are cheaper than Volkswagen equivalents, while being technically identical. Preventive DSG oil service costs 120–200 EUR.
Check the service history, especially timing belt replacement intervals on TDI engines, the condition of the DSG transmission, the turbocharger and EGR valve on diesel cars, and any timing-chain issues on 1.4 TSI engines. A diagnostic check at a specialized VAG service is recommended.
