Most Popular Brands and Models in Montenegro

The Montenegrin used-car market is traditionally dominated by German brands — Volkswagen (Golf, Passat, Polo), Škoda (Octavia, Fabia, Superb), Audi (A3, A4, A6, Q5), BMW (Series 3, X3, X5) and Mercedes (C-Class, E-Class, GLC). There is also strong demand for French brands (Renault, Peugeot, Citroën), Italian brands (Fiat) and Asian brands (Toyota, Hyundai, Kia). In recent years, the share of hybrid and electric vehicles has also been growing, especially imports.

Vehicle and Document Checks Before Buying

Before buying a used vehicle, always request to see the registration certificate, vehicle booklet, and an owner extract from the Police Administration. Check the service history, number of previous owners, and whether the chassis and engine numbers match the documents. For imported vehicles, obtain import papers, proof of paid VAT, excise duty, and homologation. It is advisable to hire an independent workshop to inspect the engine, transmission, and body corrosion — this costs €50–100 and can save you thousands.

Buying, Selling and Registration in Montenegro

The purchase agreement must be notarised — the fee is about 1% of the purchase price. After the purchase, the new owner has 15 days to transfer ownership at the Police Administration. Registration requires a valid technical inspection, compulsory insurance, proof of ownership, and an identification document. Annual registration and insurance costs range from around €180 for older small vehicles to over €1,000 for premium SUV models. Vehicles imported from the EU must pass homologation at an authorised body.
