Classic HDi diesel engines have been used in Peugeot models since the 2000s, while BlueHDi is the newer generation (from 2014) with SCR technology and AdBlue dosing to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The most widespread are the 1.5 BlueHDi (100/130 HP) and 1.6 BlueHDi (120 HP), used in the 208, 308, 2008 and 3008 models. The larger 2.0 BlueHDi (150/180 HP) powers the 508 and 5008.
When buying used Peugeot BlueHDi vehicles, it is important to check whether the AdBlue system has been serviced regularly and whether there are any diagnostic faults. The particle filter (DPF) is sensitive to frequent short trips, so prefer examples that have been driven on open roads. Older 1.6 HDi generations (up to 2010) had known turbocharger issues — ask for proof of any replacement.
The Peugeot 308 and 3008 with BlueHDi engines are a common choice among buyers who cover high annual mileage. Low fuel consumption of 4–5 l/100 km on open roads and affordable service intervals make them an economical solution. AdBlue is a fluid added to the BlueHDi engine tank to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The vehicle will not start if the AdBlue tank is completely empty. Topping up is simple and inexpensive — about EUR 1.5–2 per liter.
The 1.6 BlueHDi (after 2014) and 1.5 BlueHDi are considered reliable choices with regular servicing. Older 1.6 HDi generations (DV6 engine up to 2010) had turbocharger issues, so check the service history carefully.
