The Astra J (2009–2015) and Astra K (2015–2021) are the most common generations on the local market. Both are available as a hatchback and as the Sports Tourer estate. The latest Astra L (from 2022) is based on the Stellantis EMP2 platform and is also offered as a fully electric Astra Electric version, as well as a plug-in hybrid. The Sports Tourer estate is popular for its large boot space and family practicality.
The range includes 1.6 and 1.5 CDTi diesel engines, plus 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 turbo petrol engines. Diesel versions use around 4.5 to 6 litres per 100 km in mixed driving, making them an economical choice for drivers with higher annual mileage. A manual gearbox is standard, while a 6- or 9-speed automatic is available on most versions.
Look for a service history and check regular oil, filter and timing belt replacement. On the 1.6 CDTi diesel engine, pay attention to the condition of the EGR valve and DPF filter. Check the bodywork, especially the sills and wheel arches, as the Astra J generation can show signs of corrosion on some examples. Inspect the air-conditioning and electrical equipment, as well as whether the controls on the multimedia system work properly.
The Astra is generally a reliable compact car if it has been serviced regularly. The biggest reliability factor is documented service history, regular oil changes, and timely replacement of the timing belt or chain in line with the recommended intervals.
The Astra J (2009–2015) is based on the GM Delta II platform. The Astra K (2015–2021) brings lower weight and more efficient engines. The Astra L (from 2022) moves to the Stellantis EMP2 platform after the PSA and FCA merger and offers a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric version.
The diesel 1.6 CDTi and 1.5 CDTi versions use around 4.5 to 6 litres per 100 km in mixed driving. The petrol 1.0 and 1.2 turbo versions consume 5.5 to 7 litres, while the plug-in hybrid version can have significantly lower petrol consumption when charged regularly.
