Older Opel generations use GM’s CDTI family: 1.3 CDTI (Astra, Corsa, Meriva), 1.7 CDTI (Astra, Zafira) and 1.9/2.0 CDTI (Vectra, Insignia, Zafira). The best-known newer engine is the 1.6 CDTI (Whisper Diesel), found in Astra J and K, Insignia B and Mokka. Since 2019, in the Stellantis era, Opel has used PSA 1.5 BlueHDi and 2.0 BlueHDi engines in Corsa, Astra L, Mokka, Crossland and Grandland.
The Astra (J, K and L) with the 1.6 CDTI and 1.5 BlueHDi is the most common option in the used diesel market in Montenegro. The Insignia 2.0 CDTI/BiTurbo is a popular choice for buyers who want a larger sedan or wagon. The Mokka and Mokka X 1.6 CDTI dominate the compact SUV segment, while the Corsa D, E and F with 1.3/1.5 diesel engines often come as a first diesel car. Vivaro and Movano are a frequent choice for tradespeople and small business owners.
Older 1.3 and 1.7 CDTI engines (on Fiat/Isuzu bases) are known for stretched timing chains — check for noise at cold start and for documentation of any replacement. On the 1.6 CDTI, the biggest issues are EGR and DPF — regular servicing and avoiding only short city trips are recommended. Stellantis BlueHDi engines are reliable with timely AdBlue and oil changes, but they require authorized diagnostics. Check the condition of the vacuum pump and turbo system on models with over 150,000 km.
The best-rated is the 1.6 CDTI Whisper Diesel from 2014 onward, developed by Opel itself. It is reliable and economical with regular servicing and quality oil. From the Stellantis era, the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5) also gets good reviews.
The 1.7 CDTI (Isuzu-based) has known issues with timing chain stretch, the EGR and, in some cases, the dual-mass flywheel. With a proper service history and correct maintenance, the engine can run reliably for over 250,000 km.
The Astra 1.6 CDTI (110–136 HP) uses an average of 4.5 to 5.5 l/100 km in mixed driving. On the open road it can drop below 4 l/100 km, while in the city it can exceed 6 l/100 km.
