Diesel engines in SUV vehicles deliver high torque at low revs, which is especially useful on Montenegro's mountainous roads and when towing a trailer. Fuel consumption averages 6–9 liters per 100 km, which is significantly lower than comparable petrol SUV models. Most diesel SUV vehicles also come with all-wheel drive (4x4, xDrive, quattro, 4Motion).
Among the most in-demand diesel SUV vehicles are BMW X3 and X5, Audi Q5 and Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE, as well as Volkswagen Tiguan and Touareg. In the more affordable segment, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai, and Dacia Duster are popular. Most of these models are available with 2.0 and 3.0-liter diesel engines.
When buying a used diesel SUV, be sure to check the service history and the condition of the DPF filter, EGR valve, and turbocharger. For models with 4x4 drive, inspect the condition of the differential, driveshaft, and Haldex coupling. Check for oil leaks, gearbox operation, and timing chain replacement history. A diagnostic inspection at an authorized or specialized service center is recommended before making a final decision.
For drivers who cover more than 15,000 km a year, a diesel SUV is usually more cost-effective than a petrol one because of lower fuel consumption and higher torque. On mountain roads and when towing, diesel engines offer better efficiency. Diesel fuel prices in Montenegro are competitive compared with the region.
Smaller diesel SUV models (Tucson, Qashqai, Tiguan) average 6–7 l/100 km in combined driving. Larger models such as the X5, Q7, or Touareg use 7–9 l/100 km, and in demanding conditions even over 10 l/100 km.
