Top BMW Plug-in Hybrid Models

The best-selling models are the 330e (3 Series), 530e (5 Series), X3 xDrive30e and X5 xDrive45e. The 330e offers up to 60 km of electric range and a system output of 252–292 HP. The 530e has a similar setup in a larger sedan. The X5 45e uses a 3.0 inline-six petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a total of 394 HP, and can travel about 80 km on electricity. The newer generation (G05 LCI, G20 LCI) has a larger battery and a significantly better range than the original PHEV versions.

Who Is It For?

A plug-in hybrid is a smart choice for drivers who can charge overnight at home, at a holiday house or in a garage, and who cover most daily trips within the electric range. In such cases, fuel consumption can drop below 2 l/100 km. If the battery is rarely charged, a hybrid BMW effectively becomes a heavier petrol car with consumption of 8–10 l/100 km due to the extra battery weight, making it less economical than a regular petrol model.

What to Check on a Used One

Be sure to check the battery SoH, the number of full charging cycles, and whether the vehicle was charged regularly. EU examples from the Netherlands and Germany were often used as company cars — some were charged infrequently, which increases wear on the petrol engine. Also check the operation of the eBoost function, regenerative braking, and the switch from electric to hybrid mode. The high-voltage battery warranty is 8 years or 100,000 km.
