Hybrid cars combine a petrol or diesel engine with an electric motor. The most common types are full hybrids (HEV), mild hybrids (MHEV), and plug-in hybrids (PHEV). HEV and MHEV charge only while driving, while PHEV models can also be charged from a socket and offer greater range in fully electric mode.
In city driving, hybrids use less fuel and run more quietly thanks to the electric motor at start-up and at low speeds. The regenerative braking system returns energy to the battery, further reducing costs. On open roads, consumption is usually closer to that of classic internal combustion engines.
When buying a used hybrid, pay special attention to the battery condition, number of charging cycles, and service history. Check whether the vehicle was regularly maintained by an authorized service center and whether there is documentation for any battery replacement or hybrid system component repairs.
A conventional hybrid (HEV) charges its battery only while driving, through the engine and regenerative braking. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a larger battery that can also be charged from a socket, allowing dozens of kilometres of fully electric driving before the internal combustion engine starts.
