Buses are most often divided into minibuses (up to 22 passengers), midi and standard buses (up to 50 seats) and high-end touring models with a toilet, air conditioning and reclining seats. The most common brands on the Montenegrin market are Mercedes-Benz (Sprinter, Tourismo, Travego, Citaro), Setra, MAN, Iveco, Neoplan, Volvo and Temsa. Most of the offer consists of used vehicles from Western European countries.
Tourist buses are essential for seasonal passenger transport to the coast and for organised tours to Skadar Lake, Durmitor and Boka Kotorska. Intercity buses operate regular routes between Podgorica, Nikšić, Bar and other centres. City buses transport passengers in Podgorica and other major cities. Minibuses are popular for hotel transfers and smaller tour groups.
When buying a used bus, check the service history, original mileage, engine condition, gearbox and braking system. Pay attention to body corrosion, interior condition, and the proper operation of the air conditioning and heating systems. Check the tachograph and the validity of passenger transport documentation. Driving buses with more than 9 seats requires a category D driving licence and a CPC certificate for professional transport. Prices for used tourist buses range from €15,000 for older models to over €150,000 for newer high-end touring versions.
For vehicles designed to carry more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver, a category D licence is required. For minibuses with up to 16 passengers, category D1 is allowed. Professional passenger transport additionally requires a CPC qualification card.
The average fuel consumption of a modern tourist bus is between 22 and 32 l/100 km, depending on the configuration, load and route profile. City buses usually consume more due to frequent stops.
M3 is the category for buses designed to carry more than 8 passengers and with a total mass exceeding 5 tonnes. These buses are subject to stricter technical inspection rules and mandatory installation of a digital tachograph.
