The used market is led by the C-Class (W204, W205, W206) and E-Class (W212, W213) — sedans and estates with OM651 and OM654 diesel engines, which are standard in this segment. The SUV lineup is headed by the GLC (X253) and GLE (W166, V167). In Montenegro, older models such as the W124 and W210 are also very common and, thanks to their durability, still hold steady prices on the secondary market.
With OM651 diesel engines (first generation, up to 2014), the most common issues are worn injectors and the timing chain — check the service history and oil consumption. The newer OM654 (from 2016) is generally reliable, but it requires flawless AdBlue system maintenance. 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic automatic transmissions call for a preventive oil change at 80,000 km. For 4MATIC models, inspect the transfer case; the air suspension (Airmatic) on the E/S-Class and GLE often requires expensive repairs, especially on vehicles over 150,000 km.
Mercedes has an official service center in Podgorica, and in larger cities there are trusted independent Mercedes specialists with XENTRY/DAS diagnostics. The most reliable used examples usually come from private imports from Germany, where Mercedes is most common and has the best service coverage. When buying, ask for a Carfax/AutoDNA report and, if possible, the official Mercedes service history through the WIS database.
Among diesels, the OM642 (3.0 V6 CDI) and the newer OM654 (2.0 CDI from 2016) stand out, provided the service history is flawless. Among petrol engines, the M271 EVO and M274 (2.0 turbo) have a good reputation. Avoid early OM651 units (pre-2012) with injector issues if there is no documented repair.
Routine service for a C-Class or E-Class costs 250–500 EUR at an authorized service center. Specialized independent workshops are cheaper. Bigger jobs — 7G/9G-Tronic service 300–500 EUR, AdBlue system 500–1,200 EUR, Airmatic suspension (air spring replacement) 600–1,500 EUR per axle.
4MATIC is a permanent AWD system that performs excellently in winter conditions and on wet mountain roads in Montenegro. The system is mechanically reliable, but when buying, check the transfer case and differentials — noise or vibrations from the drivetrain indicate the need for a more expensive repair.
