The most common generations are the E70 (2006–2013), F15 (2013–2018), and G05 (2018–present). The older E53 is still found in the lower price range. Most examples come with xDrive, while the 30d diesel (3.0d) is the most popular version. Stronger variants include the 40d, 50i, and M50d with three or four turbochargers.
For the E70 and F15 generations, it is important to check the condition of the air suspension (on models with Adaptive M suspension or rear air suspension), as well as the xDrive transfer case and кардан shaft. On N57 and B57 diesel engines, be sure to inspect the DPF, EGR, and AdBlue system. Ask for service history and BMW-compatible diagnostics before buying. Check the bodywork for possible damage from import handling.
Prices for used X5 models range from around EUR 10,000 for older E70 examples to over EUR 70,000 for recent G05 models with rich equipment. Many examples come from Germany, which makes it possible to find well-equipped versions. Maintenance is more demanding than for standard SUVs, but residual value remains stable for well-maintained examples.
The F15 generation with N57 and B57 diesel engines is considered very reliable with regular servicing. The G05 offers the latest technology and better equipment, but at a significantly higher price. The E70 can be a good choice if there is proof of proper maintenance and no issues with the air suspension.
The X5 30d (3.0 six-cylinder diesel) averages 7–9 l/100 km in mixed driving. In the city it can use over 10 l/100 km, while on the open road it can drop below 7 l/100 km.
Air suspension on the rear axle (and optionally on all four wheels in some versions) can leak over time. Replacing the air spring is a standard repair, and the full air suspension system requires careful diagnostics before purchase.
