Renault offers turbocharged TCe engines in its lineup (0.9, 1.0, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.6 liters) as well as naturally aspirated SCe units. The 1.3 TCe, developed in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz, is installed in Megane, Kadjar and Captur and delivers 115 to 160 HP with combined fuel consumption of around 6 l/100 km. The smaller 1.0 TCe is a good fit for city driving in Clio and Captur.
When buying used Renault TCe engines, pay attention to oil consumption, which can be elevated on earlier 1.2 TCe generations (up to 2016). Check the timing chain on 0.9 and 1.2 TCe engines — some series had issues with chain stretch. Naturally aspirated SCe engines (1.6) are technically simpler and cheaper to maintain, but they have slightly higher city fuel consumption.
Renault Clio and Captur with petrol engines are popular choices for city driving in Podgorica, Bar and Budva. A lower starting price compared with diesel versions, simpler maintenance and the fact that they do not have a DPF filter make them a practical solution for drivers covering up to 15,000 km per year. Spare parts and service are widely available and affordable.
TCe refers to turbocharged petrol engines with direct injection and smaller displacement plus a turbocharger. SCe (Smart Combustion Efficiency) are naturally aspirated petrol engines without a turbocharger, simpler to maintain but with slightly higher fuel consumption.
The Renault Clio with the 1.0 TCe and the Megane with the 1.3 TCe are rated as reliable when serviced regularly. The 1.6 SCe engine is technically the simplest and known for long service life, but it is rarely offered in newer models today.
