Clio III (2005–2012), Clio IV (2012–2019) and Clio V (from 2019) are the three generations most common on the Montenegrin market. Clio IV was also available as the Grandtour estate, while Clio V is hatchback only. The latest generation is based on the CMF-B platform shared with the Renault Captur and offers modern driver-assistance systems, a digital instrument cluster and an E-Tech hybrid version with combined fuel consumption below 5 litres per 100 km.
The most common petrol engines are the naturally aspirated 1.2 16V, 0.9 and 1.0 TCe turbo units, and the 1.5 dCi diesel. The E-Tech hybrid combines a 1.6 petrol engine with two electric motors and offers mostly electric city driving. A manual five-speed or six-speed gearbox is standard, while EDC automatic dual-clutch and E-Tech automatic versions are available on newer variants.
Look for a service history and check for regular oil, filter and timing belt changes. On 1.5 dCi diesel engines, pay attention to the turbocharger and injectors, which may need replacement on high-mileage vehicles. Check how the EDC gearbox works, as some examples may jerk at low speeds. Inspect the bodywork, paint quality and whether the electric windows, air conditioning and other systems work properly.
The Clio is generally a reliable compact car. The biggest factor in reliability is a documented service history, regular oil changes and timely timing belt replacement according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
In mixed driving, the naturally aspirated 1.2 16V engine uses about 6.5 to 7.5 litres of petrol per 100 km. The turbo 0.9 and 1.0 TCe units use 5.5 to 6.5 litres, the 1.5 dCi diesel uses 4 to 5 litres, while the E-Tech hybrid can use under 4.5 litres per 100 km in city driving.
EDC is a classic dual-clutch automatic transmission. E-Tech is a dedicated automatic transmission developed for the hybrid version, featuring multimode control of the petrol engine and two electric motors.
