The second-generation 308 (2013–2021) is based on the EMP2 platform and won the 2014 Car of the Year award. The third generation (from 2021) keeps the updated EMP2 platform and features a modern i-Cockpit interior with a digital instrument cluster. Both generations are available as a hatchback and SW estate, while the third generation also offers plug-in hybrid versions with an electric range of around 60 km, as well as the fully electric e-308.
The most common engines are the 1.5 BlueHDi and 1.6 BlueHDi diesel engines, plus the 1.2 PureTech petrol engines with 110 and 130 HP. The third generation also brings plug-in hybrid versions with combined output of 180 and 225 HP. In mixed driving, diesel versions consume around 4 to 5.5 litres per 100 km, making them an economical choice for drivers with higher annual mileage. The EAT8 eight-speed automatic transmission is available on most versions.
Look for the service history and check regular oil changes, especially on 1.2 PureTech engines, where the timing belt running in oil previously required shorter replacement intervals. On BlueHDi diesel engines, pay attention to the DPF filter, EGR valve and AdBlue system. Inspect the condition of the EAT8 automatic transmission and make sure the electronic i-Cockpit components are working properly. On plug-in hybrid versions, check the battery condition and the number of charging cycles.
The third generation (from 2021) has a more modern interior with a digital i-Cockpit instrument cluster and a larger infotainment screen, as well as plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions. The second generation (2013–2021) is still available on the used market at more affordable prices.
The 308 is generally reliable if the recommended service intervals are followed. Critical points are regular oil changes on the 1.2 PureTech engine, and maintaining the DPF filter, EGR valve and AdBlue system on BlueHDi diesel engines.
The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel versions consume around 4 to 5 litres per 100 km in mixed driving. The 1.2 PureTech petrol engine uses 5 to 6.5 litres, while the plug-in hybrid version can achieve effective petrol consumption below 3 litres per 100 km in everyday use when charged regularly.
