Older generations use naturally aspirated 1.4 ECOTEC, 1.6 and 1.8 engines in Astra G/H, Vectra, Zafira and Corsa B/C/D. From 2014, Opel introduced the 1.0 Turbo (3-cylinder, 105–115 HP) in Adam, Corsa E, Astra K and Mokka X, as well as the 1.4 Turbo in stronger versions of the Astra and Insignia. In the Stellantis era (from 2019), PSA’s 1.2 PureTech turbo (100–130 HP) appeared, powering Corsa F, Astra L, Mokka and Crossland.
Corsa (D, E and F) is the most sought-after petrol city car across all generations. Astra J, K and L with 1.4/1.6 and 1.2 PureTech engines is well represented in the compact segment. Mokka and Mokka X with the 1.4 Turbo, as well as the new Mokka B with the 1.2 PureTech, are popular as compact SUVs. Insignia 1.5/1.6 Turbo is a common choice for those who want a larger body, while Adam is an interesting small city car with 1.0 and 1.2 engines.
With 1.4 Turbo engines, the most common issue is the timing chain, which can stretch — check the service history and listen for noises on cold starts. The PSA 1.2 PureTech engine is generally reliable, but it has known issues with the wet timing belt stretching and wearing out, which can clog the intake channels — replacement is recommended at 80,000–100,000 km. Naturally aspirated 1.4 ECOTEC and 1.6 engines in older Astras and Corsas are simple and dependable with regular maintenance. In Montenegro, the Opel service network is well developed, and spare parts are affordable.
The 1.2 PureTech offers good performance and fuel economy, but early versions are known for issues with the wet timing belt stretching — preventive replacement at 80,000–100,000 km is recommended. Newer EB2ADTS engines (from 2022) are improved in this area.
The Astra J/K with the 1.4 Turbo (125–150 HP) consumes 6 to 7.5 l/100 km in combined driving. On the open road it can drop to 5.5 l/100 km, while in the city it can exceed 8 l/100 km.
The 1.4 ECOTEC in older Astras and Corsas is a simple, robust engine with a timing chain. With regular oil and coolant changes, it can reliably run beyond 200,000 km, making it a favorite in the affordable used-car segment.
