The W212 E-Class (2009–2016) with the E220 CDI engine (OM651) is the most common choice in this range. The W204 C-Class (2007–2014) is also available with the same engine in a more compact package. Among SUVs, the GLK (X204) dominates, while the first-generation ML (W164) appears from time to time. Better-equipped CLS and SLK examples are an interesting segment for style lovers.
The OM651 diesel engine (220 CDI) is a major improvement over the OM646, but early versions (2009–2011) had injector issues that were replaced by the manufacturer under warranty. Check the service record for replacement. The 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission requires an oil change every 60,000–80,000 km. On the GLK and ML, pay attention to the condition of the air suspension (Airmatic) if it was equipped. On the W212 generation, check the COMAND infotainment system.
Mercedes vehicles in this range are still within reach of specialized independent workshops in Montenegro, especially in Podgorica. For major repairs (transmission, engine), an authorized service center is recommended for proper diagnostics. Yes, Mercedes replaced the problematic injectors on 2009–2011 examples during the warranty period. Later OM651 versions (from 2012 onward) are significantly more reliable. When buying, ask for proof of injector replacement if the car is older.
The facelifted version (2013–2016) has a new front and rear design, a higher-quality interior, an improved 7G-Tronic Plus transmission, and better sound insulation. For the same money, a pre-facelift example usually has lower mileage, while the facelift offers a more modern driving experience.
The GLK is more compact, more economical, and cheaper to maintain. The ML W164 offers more space and comfort, but it is older as a generation and can have more expensive repairs (air suspension, more complex 4MATIC system). For everyday use, the GLK is the more practical choice.
