In the up to €10,000 segment, the most common Ford models are the Ford Focus (generation 2 and 3), Ford Fiesta, Ford Mondeo and Ford C-Max. The Focus is a compact hatchback or wagon known for its excellent chassis setup and comfort on long journeys. The Fiesta is a city hatchback with sporty driving characteristics. The Mondeo offers sedan-like space and equipment, while the C-Max is a practical family MPV.
Within this range, Ford most often comes with 1.4 and 1.6 Duratec petrol engines, the 1.0 EcoBoost turbo petrol and 1.6 and 2.0 TDCi diesel engines. TDCi diesels are economical (5–6 l/100 km) and provide strong torque. The 1.0 EcoBoost is an award-winning three-cylinder engine with consumption of around 6 litres. For first-generation EcoBoost engines, it is important to check the cooling system and cylinder head condition.
For Ford, check the condition of the DPF filter on TDCi models and the turbocharger. On models with the PowerShift automatic transmission (DPS6), make sure to test gear changes for smoothness — this gearbox has a history of issues. Review the service book, especially confirmation of timing belt replacement. On older Focus models, inspect the body for corrosion on the sills and under the wheel arches.
The second-generation Ford Focus with the 1.6 Duratec petrol engine is considered an exceptionally reliable choice. The Fiesta with the same engine is also very durable. For TDCi diesel versions, examples with documented service history are recommended.
The PowerShift transmission with dual dry clutch (DPS6) has a history of clutch and mechatronics issues. Many owners have faced expensive repairs, so when buying, it is advisable to carefully test gearbox behavior or choose a manual transmission version.
