The Focus was introduced in 1998 and has since gone through four main generations. The second generation (2004–2011) and third generation (2011–2018) are the most common on Montenegro’s used-car market. The current fourth generation (Mk4, since 2018) uses the new C2 platform and brings modern equipment, advanced safety systems and mild-hybrid engines. Body styles include a five-door hatchback and an estate (Sportbreak/Wagon).
The most popular engines are the 1.5 TDCi and 1.6 TDCi diesel units, as well as the 1.0 EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol engine, which offers low fuel consumption. Newer examples are available with the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel and the 1.0 EcoBoost mHEV (mild hybrid). More powerful versions include the 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBoost petrol engines, as well as the 2.0 TDCi diesel. The sporty Focus ST version comes with the 2.3 EcoBoost producing 280 HP. Average consumption ranges from 4.5 l/100 km for diesel to 8 l/100 km for stronger petrol variants.
On the third generation, check the condition of the PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission — the MPS6 type is known for clutch issues that can be expensive to repair. On the 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engine, check for radiator leaks and the condition of the cooling system. Test the infotainment system (Sync) and digital controls, as they are known to have occasional faults. Review the service history and check when the timing belt was replaced.
The second generation (Mk2, 2004–2011) with the 1.6 and 1.8 diesel or 1.6 and 1.8 petrol engines is considered one of the most reliable. The third generation is more modern, but if it is an automatic, the PowerShift transmission should be checked carefully.
The PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) in the third generation has known problems with the clutches and the control module. Repairs can be expensive, so a thorough inspection at a specialized service is recommended before buying.
The estate (Wagon/Sportbreak) has about 30 cm longer rear overhang and a boot of around 600 liters, compared with about 375 liters in the hatchback. Mechanically they are identical, so the choice comes down to space needs.
