The first-generation E84 (2009–2015) is based on the BMW 3 Series and comes with rear-wheel drive. The F48 generation (2015–2022) switched to front-wheel drive and the UKL platform shared with the Mini Cooper. The current U11 generation (from 2022) brings an updated chassis, hybrid variants, and the fully electric iX1. Each generation offers sDrive (front-wheel drive) and xDrive (all-wheel drive) versions.
The most popular versions are the sDrive18d and xDrive20d with diesel engines and average fuel consumption of 5–7 l/100 km. The petrol sDrive18i and xDrive20i deliver quiet operation and consumption of 6–8 l/100 km. The current generation is also available as the xDrive25e plug-in hybrid and as the fully electric iX1 with a range of over 400 km. With xDrive, the X1 is a practical choice for Montenegro’s mountain roads and winter conditions.
For the F48 generation with the B47 diesel engine, check the service history and oil change intervals. The automatic Aisin transmission and ZF8HP require an oil change at 80,000–100,000 km. For the E84 X1 with the N47 engine, pay attention to the timing chain. Check the condition of the xDrive system and differentials, as well as the iDrive infotainment electronics.
sDrive is the front-wheel-drive version (on the F48 and U11) or rear-wheel drive (on the E84), while xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version. xDrive offers better traction in snow, rain, and on uneven surfaces, which is useful on Montenegro’s mountain roads.
The BMW X1 sDrive18d and xDrive20d average 5–7 l/100 km in combined driving. The xDrive version uses about 0.3–0.5 l/100 km more than the sDrive version. The xDrive25e plug-in hybrid has a declared combined consumption below 2 l/100 km with regular battery charging.
The X1 offers 505–540 liters of trunk space (depending on the generation) and a roomy rear seat row for the compact segment. For a family with two children and typical luggage, the space is sufficient. If you need more room, the BMW X3 is the next step up in the SUV lineup.
