The F30 generation with the B47 diesel engine (from 2014 onward) is considered the most balanced choice — timing-chain issues from the previous N47 generation were resolved, and the chassis is more modern. Among older models, the E90 320d with the M47 engine (up to 2008) also has a good reputation with regular servicing.

A modern 320d (F30/G20 generation) averages 5–6 l/100 km in combined driving, while on the open road it can consume below 5 l/100 km. The xDrive version uses about 0.5 l/100 km more than the rear-wheel-drive version.

The 330e plug-in hybrid makes sense for drivers who cover shorter daily distances and can regularly charge the battery at home. In electric mode it offers 50–60 km of range, which covers typical city driving. For longer trips, it switches to conventional petrol operation.

The sedan has a classic three-box design and a trunk of about 480 litres, while the Touring wagon offers a larger cargo area (500–1,510 litres), more practical tailgate access and more space for travel and family use. The mechanics and engines are identical.
