Most newer BMW vehicles use the ZF 8HP Steptronic gearbox — an 8-speed classic AT with torque converter, known for smooth operation, quick shifts and low fuel consumption. Sportier models (M Performance, M series) often use DCT (dual-clutch) or newer ZF SMG variants. Older models (up to 2010) also had 6-speed AT gearboxes from ZF.
Among the most sought-after BMW automatics on the Montenegrin market are the 3 Series (F30, G20), 5 Series (F10, G30), X3 and X5 with xDrive, as well as the 7 Series. Compact models (1 Series, X1, X2) with the new 7-speed DCT gearbox are also becoming more common.
Although BMW has long not officially recommended changing the oil in ZF gearboxes, experts generally recommend a change every 80,000–100,000 km for long-term durability. Oil and filter for the ZF 8HP cost around 150–300 EUR with labour in Montenegro. When buying a used BMW automatic, carefully check the gear changes — any jerks or delays indicate a problem.
