Mercedes automatic transmissions

The 5G-Tronic (722.6) is a 5-speed AT used in older models (W211, W203). The 7G-Tronic (722.9) is a 7-speed AT, dominant between 2004 and 2016. The 9G-Tronic (725.0) is a newer 9-speed AT found in models from 2014 onward — known for low fuel consumption and exceptionally smooth operation. Compact models (A-Class, CLA, GLA) also use the 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission.

Most in-demand automatic Mercedes models

In the Montenegro market, the most popular are C-Class, E-Class and S-Class with 7G-Tronic or 9G-Tronic gearboxes, as well as SUV models GLC, GLE and GLS. Mercedes automatics are a go-to choice for drivers who want a quiet, comfortable and safe car for long journeys.

Service and common issues

Mercedes recommends changing the oil in the 7G-Tronic gearbox every 80,000 km, and in the 9G-Tronic every 125,000 km — in practice, more frequent service is recommended, especially for imported vehicles with an unknown service history. The cost of an oil and filter change is €200–400. A common failure point on the 7G-Tronic gearbox is the electronic control unit inside the gearbox (conductor plate) — repair can cost €800–1,500.
