The most popular diesel versions are the 318d, 320d and 330d, with N47 engines (E90/F30) and the later B47 (F30/G20). The 320d with 184 to 190 HP is considered the best balance of performance and fuel economy. The 330d and 335d offer six-cylinder comfort and strong torque. Average fuel consumption ranges from 4.5 to 6 l/100 km in combined driving.
On N47 engines (2007–2014), the timing chain issue on the gearbox side is well known — check whether it has been replaced. On B47 engines this issue was resolved, but you should still monitor the DPF filter, EGR valve and turbocharger. For xDrive versions, check the transfer case and driveshaft condition. Look for service history and BMW-compatible diagnostics.
The diesel 3 Series is regularly among the best-selling premium sedans on the Montenegrin market. Prices range from €4,000 for older E90 models to over €35,000 for the newer G20. Touring versions are in demand for their practicality, while M Sport packages tend to hold stronger resale value.

On early N47 engines (2007–2011), the timing chain issue was significant. Later examples have a modified chain, and most active examples in Montenegro have already had the chain replaced or the issue resolved. Check the service records.
xDrive offers better traction on wet and slippery surfaces, which is useful for Montenegro's mountain roads and winter driving. It brings slightly higher fuel consumption and more complex maintenance. For drivers on the coast who rarely drive in snow, the RWD version is usually sufficient.
