The most common TDI engines are the 2.0 TDI with 143, 150, 170 and 190 HP, as well as the 1.6 TDI with 116 to 136 HP in later B8 and B9 generations. Older B7 models also came with 2.0 TDI BPW and BRD engines. More powerful versions include the 3.0 TDI V6 with 204 to 286 HP, often paired with quattro drive.
On the B7 and early B8 (2.0 TDI CAGA), there were issues with oil consumption and a stretched timing chain on the gearbox side. On B8 and B9 generation cars with EA288 engines, the main thing is regular servicing of the DPF, EGR and AdBlue systems. For multitronic (CVT) gearboxes, check the oil condition and pressures, while the S tronic dual-clutch requires servicing every 60,000 km. Quattro models require inspection of the Haldex coupling or Torsen differential.
Used A4 TDI prices range from around 4,000 EUR for a B7 generation model to over 35,000 EUR for a newer B9 Avant with quattro drive. A large number of examples were imported from Germany. Avant estate versions remain in steady demand thanks to their practicality, while the sedan still dominates in business use.
The B8 facelift (2012–2015) and B9 (2015–present) with EA288 engines are considered very reliable with regular servicing. Older B7 and pre-facelift B8 models with the CAGA engine can have issues with oil consumption and the timing chain.
The Audi A4 2.0 TDI averages 5–6.5 l/100 km in combined driving. Quattro versions use a bit more (5.5–7 l/100 km), while the 1.6 TDI can use under 5 l/100 km on the open road.
Multitronic is a CVT gearbox used in front-wheel-drive A4 models. It requires regular oil changes and can be sensitive to aggressive driving. Tronic variants (S tronic, Tiptronic) are technically different and usually more reliable in newer models.
