Oldtimer Status in Montenegro

To qualify for oldtimer status, under Montenegrin regulations a vehicle must be at least 30 years old and in original or properly restored condition. Status is proven by a certificate issued by the Auto Moto Savez Crne Gore (AMSCG) or another authorized club. A certified oldtimer can receive historic licence plates (green), with more favorable registration terms and a lower annual fee.

Classic Insurance and Use

Vehicles with historic plates have usage restrictions — they are usually not allowed for everyday driving, but are used for exhibitions, events and short tourist drives. Classic (oldtimer) insurance is usually cheaper than standard insurance because it assumes low annual mileage, but it requires the vehicle to be garaged and that you have another car for daily use. The technical inspection for oldtimers is adapted to the original specification of the vehicle from the time it was produced.

What to Look for When Buying

For oldtimers, originality has the highest value — factory paint, an engine with the matching number, original equipment and documentation. Check whether the chassis is damaged by corrosion, which is a common problem on vehicles from the 1970s and 1980s. Restored examples should be accompanied by photo documentation of the process and receipts for parts. The most popular oldtimer brands in the region are Mercedes-Benz (W123, W124, SL), BMW (E21, E30), Volkswagen Beetle and Golf 1, Fiat 500/600 and Yugo.
