This price range is dominated by the E90/E91 3 Series from 2005–2011, offered with popular 320d and 318d diesel engines. Another common choice is the E60 5 Series with 520d and 525d engines, as well as the E87/E81 1 Series with 116d and 118d engines. Among SUV models, the E83 X3 is the most common, while the first-generation X1 (E84) can also occasionally be found. Touring estate versions often offer more space for the same price as sedan variants.
With N47 diesel engines (2007–2014), the timing chain can stretch on older examples, so be sure to ask for the service history and listen for noises from the back of the engine. The EGR valve, intake swirl flaps and a worn DPF are common sources of issues on the 320d and 520d. For models with the ZF 6HP automatic transmission, check whether the oil was changed at 80,000–100,000 km. Also pay attention to leaks around the rear suspension mounting points on the body, a known weak spot of the E90 generation.
For BMW cars in this range in Montenegro, there is a well-developed network of independent workshops, especially in Podgorica, Nikšić and Bar, that work with BMW diagnostics. Service prices at independent garages are significantly more affordable than at authorized dealers, making ownership of an older BMW more feasible. Used and aftermarket parts are easy to source, and for common wear items such as brakes, filters and timing chains, reputable brands are recommended.
The most reliable are models with M47 and N47 diesel engines with documented service history, as well as petrol versions 320i and 520i with the N46 engine. The E90 3 Series is generally considered a balanced choice between reliability and running costs.
It is realistic to find an E83 X3 and older examples of the E70 X5 in this range, but usually with higher mileage (220,000+ km). For these models, especially check the xDrive drivetrain, transfer case and self-leveling dampers (on the X5).
For a 10–15-year-old BMW with a 2.0 diesel engine, annual registration including compulsory insurance and technical inspection is usually €280–450, depending on age and the specific registration location.
