Up to €5,000, models aged 10–18 years dominate. The most common are VW Golf V, Škoda Octavia II, Opel Astra H, Ford Focus II, Renault Megane II/III, Peugeot 307/308 and Fiat Stilo. In the premium segment, BMW 3 Series (E46/E90) and Audi A4 B6/B7 are available with higher mileage. Most vehicles have 1.6–2.0 TDI diesel engines or 1.4–1.8 petrol engines that are well known and easy to service.
Check the service history, the condition of DPF and EGR components on diesel models, as well as the operating temperature and smooth idle running of the engine. Inspect the clutch and synchronizer rings on manual transmissions, and the transmission oil on automatic models. Bodywork is often the risk area in this price range — inspect the sills, fenders and underbody for corrosion, especially on vehicles from the coast where salt speeds up sheet metal deterioration.
Annual registration for vehicles in this range (1.4–2.0 L engine, 10–18 years old) ranges from €200 to €380, including mandatory insurance and technical inspection. Spare parts for the listed models are affordable and available in Podgorica, Nikšić and along the coast. Also budget for new tires, a battery and brakes — these are components that often need refreshing when taking over a vehicle of this age.
The most common are Volkswagen, Škoda, Opel, Renault, Peugeot and Ford. In the premium segment, older BMW E90 and Audi B6/B7 models are available, but with higher mileage and usually greater maintenance costs.
For annual mileage above 15,000 km, diesel is still more cost-effective because of lower fuel consumption. For mostly city driving and lower mileage, a petrol engine brings fewer complications and cheaper maintenance, since it does not have DPF and EGR issues.
