In Bar, automatic versions of the VW Passat and Tiguan, Audi A4 and Q5, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class and GLC, as well as Japanese SUV models such as the RAV4 and CR-V, are available. Most of these vehicles come from imports with modern 7- and 8-speed transmissions.
The most common types on the market are classic AT (torque converter), DSG/DCT (dual-clutch), CVT (continuously variable) and Tiptronic. Each has a different character — AT is smooth and durable, DSG is quick and sporty, CVT is smooth but less sporty, and Tiptronic lets you select gears manually.
Transmission service and history are key — ask for proof of regular oil changes. During a test drive, pay attention to jerks, delays, and unusual noises. With DSG, check the clutch condition, and with CVT, the belt. Repairing more expensive transmissions can cost €1,500–€5,000.
Yes, especially during busy summer months with frequent stops and short trips. An automatic is more comfortable and reduces driver fatigue on longer drives along the Adriatic highway.
Oil and filter service for an automatic usually costs €100–€250. In Bar, there are several services that work on German DSG and ZF transmissions.
In the premium segment (Audi, BMW, Mercedes), automatics are common with both petrol and diesel engines. In compact and mid-size models, they are more often paired with diesel or turbo petrol engines.
