Types of Automatic Transmissions

The classic automatic (hydraulic, with a torque converter) is best known for reliability and smooth shifting, but it usually has slightly higher fuel consumption. DSG and DCT (dual-clutch) offer quicker gear changes and a sportier feel, and are a common choice in the VW Group and premium brands. CVT (continuously variable) keeps the engine in its optimal rev range and reduces fuel consumption, and is popular in Toyota and Honda hybrids. Tiptronic is essentially a classic automatic with the option of manual gear changes.

Advantages and Disadvantages

An automatic gearbox makes city driving and stop-and-go traffic easier, reduces fatigue on long trips and, in modern versions, can even be more economical than a manual. On the other hand, automatics are more expensive to buy, while repairs and servicing cost significantly more than manual gearboxes — DSG mechatronics (control unit) can cost €1,500–€3,000, with a classic AT gearbox rebuild costing about the same. When buying a used car, it is important that the transmission oil has been changed regularly, even though manufacturers often do not recommend it and service centres advise otherwise.

On the Montenegro Market

The most sought-after automatic models are VW Tiguan/Passat with DSG, BMW and Mercedes sedans with a classic 8-speed AT (ZF and 7G-Tronic), Audi Q5/Q7 with S tronic, and Toyota hybrids with e-CVT. When buying a used car with an automatic transmission, check whether preventive oil servicing was done at 60,000–80,000 km, whether the gearbox shifts smoothly and quietly without jerks, and whether there is any delay when changing gears. A test drive in different conditions (city, highway) is essential.
